The Country

Malaysia is spread over 330,000 sq km and comprises West or Peninsula are Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu in the East Malaysia are located the States of Sabah and Serawak, and the Federal territories of Labuan. of the population comprises Malays and indigenous races while the Chinese make up 31% and the Indians, about 8%.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
* Malaysian, aged between 18 - 30 (as at date of interview)
* Minimum academic qualification: Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with a pass in English taken in one sitting OR SPM open certificate with pass in 4 subjects including English taken in one sitting.
* Fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English
* Minimum height - Female: 157cm, Male: 165cm
* Excellent health and good eyesight (not colour blind) and pleasant personality
* Experience in customer service would be an advantage

The job will be based on a five year contract. Qualified and interested candidates are welcomed to our walk-in interviews which will be conducted from time to time. The time and venue will be publicised via advertisements in selected local newspapers as well as in the Vacancies section of our website.

THE SELECTION PROCESS
The procedure below will be done during the interview. We normally conduct a walk-in interview. This will be completed on the same day.
* Height measurement
* Verification of original document
* Preliminary interview – for candidates who have passed the above
* Grooming assessment
* Final interview – a more detailed assessment of the capabilities and personalities of candidates
THE TRAINING PROGRAMME
Successful candidates will undergo a training programme for approximately three months at the Malaysia Airlines Academy (MAS Academy), Kelana Jaya, Selangor. The training consists of 4 main parts.

Part 1:
Induction and familiarisation programme within the company, such as Company Rules and Regulations. Other areas of development include grooming and interpersonal skills.

Part 2:
Communication and hospitality

Part 3:
Responsibilities and duties in the cabin

Part 4:
First aid and safety procedures

As part of their assessment, trainees are also briefed and will undergo in-flight observation.

At the end of the training period, Malaysia Airlines will co-ordinate a graduation ceremony for successful trainees.

Hindu Festival - Thaipusam

Thaipusam is a Hindu religious festival that commemorates the birthday of Lord Muruga,and also the celebration of his parents presenting to him the vel (lance) in order for him tovanquish the evil. The festival is celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moonin the Tamil month of Thai, which falls on 23 January 2008.The largest celebration of Thaipusam happens in Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur, as processionafter procession await their chance to walk up the 272 steps to the temple. This processionstarts on the eve of Thaipusam from the Sri Mariamman Temple in the city centre, 15kmaway.During this event, devotees carry the kavadi or milk pot, run on fire, and pierce their body asit portrays their way of showing gratitude to Lord Muruga. Devotees also prepare themselvesa month before the celebration by fasting and abstaining themselves from worldly pleasures.

Chingay - A Balancing Act

With a deft lift of foot, a flag pole 'flies' high into the air and lands neatly on the forehead of a waiting member of the troupe, who tilt his head back and stretches his arms out for balance. Moving back and forth, he keeps the pole standing erect for several minutes while the crowd cheers. All eyes are on the pole: a sturdy contraption made from joining several bamboo stick. Tied to this is a large triangular flag made from a soft, gauze fabric that flutters in the breeze. The flag is that of the state of Penang and the spectacle in question is Chingay, a unique street performance that has been integral part of the island state's cultural identity for generations. The Penang Chingay association celebrates it's 109 anniversary this year.

A must during Chinese New Year Chingay can also be viewed during other Chinese festivals, special occasions and state functions. A typical performance involves 15 members- of all ages and cultural background - who use two poles to entertain crowds. The poles measure between 7.6 meters and 9.8 meters, and when attached with the flag and balanced in the air, could weigh up to 27kgs each! Yet, watching the troupe toss them around with effortless dexterity, one would think that they are mere featherweights, especially when a member as young as 10 appears to make light work of it. But if you take a close look at the faces of the players, you realize how much effort goes into even the simples action.

With their colorful flags and outfits, acrobatic displays and accompanying traditional Chinese music, every Chin gay procession is inevitably a feast for the eyes and ears. No matter how many times one watches the troupes perform, their balancing acts never fail to impress.

Batik

Batik by cap (pronounced "chop") or blok (block) is a rapidly vanishing craft. It is produced entirely by hand in small family-owned "factories" in the state of Terengganu on the east coast of Malaysia.
Both the rapid industrialization of the 90s and economic crisis at the end of that decade have contributed to the decline in batik production. Silk-screen printing of batik motifs is faster and cheaper and it is considered more progressive.

Batik is a resist process employing wax and dye. The cap (pronounced "chop") method uses copper or zinc blocks dipped in melted wax and stamped onto two-meter lengths of white cotton. The cloth is repeatedly dyed and stampled with wax until the finishing step when the wax is boiled out of the cloth. It is hung to dry on a clothesline and then folded for sale.
